Q.
I have been offered the chance to take a paid leave of absence by my employer, should I take it? Kevin, Newbridge
A.
Hi Kevin, you need to ask yourself a few additional questions and this will help you come to the answer. Do you know what you want to do during the leave of absence? If you don’t, then you should consider this first.
If you were to use the leave to travel, go back to college or try something completely different, then it could be worth considering as you have the opportunity to do something that you want, with the comfort of knowing that you can return to you job.
Q.
It is nearly time for my annual review, should I ask for a pay rise? Laurie, Dublin 24
A.
Hi Laurie, great question. Typically I would say that you should if you feel that you merit the increase in salary and if you are contributing more to your team and your company at the moment. However in the current climate it is worth considering if your company can afford an increase in salaries in addition to the above points. You should spend some time gaining an insight into your company’s performance over the last twelve months and what their plans are for the next twelve months. If they have experienced growth and are predicting further growth and expansion and you feel like it is merited, then once you can provide your line manager with relevant examples, you should request the rise.
