Recruitment & Selection Process
RETENTION
"Now you've found them. How do you keep them?"
Its about 'Why People Stay' as opposed to 'Why People Leave'. The top five reasons people stay are:
- Career growth, learning & development
- Exciting work and challenge
- Making a difference / contribution
- Great people
- Being part of a team
Believe it or not, money features way down at number 11 in the reasons why people stay.
An employee's commitment is to their boss, the team in which they work and to the projects they are working on. If they are content in these areas, their loyalty will be to the company .... The Brand.
Retaining staff isn't just the HR department's responsibility. Each individual manager or supervisor's relationship with a staff member is key to their contentment. Here are some traits that inspire loyalty:
- Acknowledgement of an employee's input."That report you wrote clinched it!"
- Appreciation of their contribution. "You're doing a great job".
- Gratitude for their commitment.
- "Thanks for all the extra time you put in on this one."
- The ability of a boss to admit their own mistakes.
- General honesty.
- A listening ear.
- Fairness and good judgement.
- Hard work inspires hard work.
In short, your loyalty to employees is what inspires their loyalty to you - and the company.
